Core Woundcare
Gauze pads, rolls and sponges are effective wound coverings because they don’t adhere to the wound they are covering and can conform to the body where the wound is located. These can also be used to pack a wound since they will not stick and provide trauma to the area during a dressing change. They can come in squares, sheets, packing strips, and rolls and can be woven or nonwoven.
Woven gauze has a loose weaving which makes absorption in the loose fibers easy. The loose texture also allows fluid to pass through into more absorbent materials much easier. Nonwoven gauze is generally made of rayon, polyester or a mix and produces less lint than woven gauze. It is typically softer and stronger as well. It is best used when extra strength and protection is needed.
Impregnated gauze is one other type of dressing called out in this section. This type of gauze dressing has been coated with a pharmaceutical material like antimicrobials, petroleum jelly, oil or water emulsion, iodine or hydrogel to further aid in recovery.
